Astrology, from the ground up
Everything in Western astrology is built from a handful of elegant parts. Learn these and every horoscope starts making sense.
01 — The Four Elements
- Fire — Passionate, dynamic and temperamental. Fire signs burn bright — they lead with instinct and inspire others to act.
- Earth — Grounded, practical and loyal. Earth signs build things that last and keep everyone else tethered to reality.
- Air — Curious, social and quick-witted. Air signs live in the world of ideas and keep the conversation moving.
- Water — Intuitive, emotional and deep. Water signs feel everything and read what others leave unsaid.
02 — The Three Modalities
- Cardinal (Aries · Cancer · Libra · Capricorn) — The initiators. Cardinal signs open each season — they start things, set direction and push the zodiac forward.
- Fixed (Taurus · Leo · Scorpio · Aquarius) — The stabilizers. Fixed signs hold the middle of each season — they sustain, deepen and defend what matters.
- Mutable (Gemini · Virgo · Sagittarius · Pisces) — The adapters. Mutable signs close each season — they flex, edit and prepare the ground for what comes next.
03 — The Ruling Planets
| Planet | Rules | Governs |
|---|---|---|
| Sun | Leo | Identity, vitality, ego |
| Moon | Cancer | Emotion, instinct, memory |
| Mercury | Gemini & Virgo | Mind, language, exchange |
| Venus | Taurus & Libra | Love, beauty, value |
| Mars | Aries | Drive, desire, action |
| Jupiter | Sagittarius | Growth, luck, meaning |
| Saturn | Capricorn | Structure, time, discipline |
| Uranus | Aquarius | Change, originality, disruption |
| Neptune | Pisces | Dreams, intuition, dissolution |
| Pluto | Scorpio | Power, transformation, depth |
04 — Sun, Moon & Rising
- Sun sign — Your core identity — set by your birth date alone. This is the sign everyone knows, and the one our sign calculator finds.
- Moon sign — Your emotional inner world — set by the Moon’s position at your exact birth time. It moves signs every two to three days.
- Rising sign — The mask you meet the world with — the sign on the eastern horizon at your birth moment. It changes roughly every two hours.
05 — Birth Charts
A birth chart (natal chart) maps every planet’s position at your exact moment and place of birth — sun, moon, rising and all twelve houses. It is the most complete picture astrology offers, and it demands precise data to be honest. Our birth chart calculator is in development; until then, explore your sun sign profile and daily horoscope.
